Faculty Fellows and Supported Students Research
Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute engages with 127 Faculty Fellows and supports more than 30 students each year who represent diverse disciplines across all four campuses of the University of Nebraska.
Since it was initiated in 2014, the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute’s student support program has invested over $2.7 million to support undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral research — of which $2.1 million has been matched one-to-one by faculty. The awards provide stipends to students working on projects that contribute to the institute’s mission to have a lasting impact on achieving more food security with less pressure on scarce water resources.
The cutting-edge research DWFI’s Faculty Fellows and supported students conduct greatly enhances and expands the institute’s work at home and around the world. The following examples are just a few of the hundreds of research projects that improve water and food security, as well as public health and the environment.

Investigating Climate’s Influence on Atrazine Groundwater Contamination
In a world wrestling with food security, using agrichemicals to increase agricultural yield is common, but there can be unintended harmful impacts to human and environmental health.
Sustainable Water Management: Solving the Mystery of Nebraska’s Intricate Aquifer System
The spider web of glacially fed aquifers in the U.S., known as “Quaternary aquifers,” supply five percent of U.S. drinking water and most of the nation’s irrigation, but they are a mystery.
Drones Provide Detailed Picture of Wetland Health
Nebraska’s wetlands are essential to the state’s ecosystem, and it’s vital that we protect them and the diversity of plant and animal species that occupy them, including many that are threatened or endangered.
Understanding Corn Ear Abnormalities to Close Yield Gaps
When Nebraskan corn growers reported concerning levels of corn ear abnormalities in 2016, the industry was eager to find the cause.
Aerial Imagery Helps Assess Cover Crop Impacts on Cash Crop Growth and Development
In agriculture, cover crops are planted to protect the soil rather than for the purpose of being harvested.
