It has been an exciting year for the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute (DWFI). We’ve seen projects move forward and make an impact, we’ve formed new partnerships and enhanced existing connections and we’ve spent time tackling difficult challenges with colleagues and friends through conferences and events.

In May 2023, DWFI welcomed 425 participants from around the globe to its headquarters in Lincoln, Neb. for the tenth Water for Food Global Conference. The 2023 conference was also a partner event for the 10th World Water Forum, the world’s largest water-related forum organized by the World Water Council, on which DWFI’s executive director serves on the Board of Governors.
Small farms less than 2 hectares — or about 5 acres — account for 11% of the world's agricultural land, yet they produce 35% of the world’s food. DWFI is working to better understand the challenges faced by these smallholder farmers and find solutions to improve agricultural productivity and livelihoods. With a team of researchers on the ground in Rwanda and strong partnerships with other entities focused on the same mission, DWFI is developing tools and sharing knowledge to enhance smallholder farming success.
The Water, Climate and Health Program brings together experts from UNMC, DWFI and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska to address Nebraska’s most pressing public health issues related to water and climate. Water, Climate and Health Program Director Jesse Bell also serves on DWFI’s leadership team. The program makes an impact both in Nebraska and around the globe.
The Dashboard for Agricultural Water Use and Nutrient Management (DAWN) project aims to support farmers in translating seasonal climate predictions into practical and accessible field-level recommendations for water and nutrient management.
Groundwater transfer mechanisms are a flexible agricultural water management approach that can help lower growers’ production risks without jeopardizing environmental needs. While groundwater transfers are currently popular in the water policy debate, there are few documented examples of their practical implementation, and in particular of how transfer design can be adapted to local hydrologic needs.
