The South Asian region has the largest irrigated area in the world, as well as hundreds of millions of smallholder farmers who irrigate. Understanding how new technology, business innovation, and water policy can improve smallholder incomes and climate resilience without compromising underlying natural resources is critical.
The Water for Food Global Institute’s entrepreneurship program in South Asia undertakes a variety of research, capacity building, and engagement activities that align with our mission of increasing food and water security globally. Given the diversity of geographic and policy contexts and multiple vibrant startup ecosystems, the region is an ideal testbed for innovative business models in irrigated agriculture.
While we see an increasing number of entrepreneurial actors seeking to make an impact in the agricultural water sector in South Asia, there has been little detailed research, synthesis, and cross-country comparison. We are working on a variety of projects and outputs intended to analyze and synthesize key trends and new knowledge related to innovation in irrigated agriculture. We also work to facilitate connections and convene meetings that strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem and allow for rapid growth and learning.
