While nitrates occur naturally in soil, nitrogen fertilizers are often applied to replenish soil for farming. However, excess nitrates can be toxic, especially when they enter the sources of drinking water like groundwater and surface water.
This session will describe economic ramifications of nitrate contamination including removal costs, lost recreation benefits, and healthcare costs as well as financial repercussions of nitrate inefficiency and downstream consequences in the Gulf of Mexico’s “dead zone.”
