Numerous types of contaminants can threaten freshwater, including chemicals, pesticides and animal waste. Waterborne pathogens like bacterias, viruses and parasites, can also contaminate water. The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is an agent of toxoplasmosis, an important and widespread zoonotic disease and its transmission in humans includes ingestion of sporulated oocysts present in contaminated water or food.
