World Water Week is a leading conference on global water issues, held every year since 1991. World Water Week attracts a diverse mix of participants from many professional backgrounds and every corner of the world to develop solutions to the world’s greatest water-related challenges, with topics ranging from food security and health to agriculture, technology, biodiversity, and the climate crisis.
Several members of the DWFI leadership team attended World Water Week August 21-24 in Stockholm, Sweden, meeting with strategic partners, and engaging with new potential collaborators in the following sessions:
Water Productivity to Improve Water Sustainability in Agricultural Production
Session hosted by DWFI
Water is key to food security, energy production, and sustaining human health and ecosystem services. This session was organized by DWFI Director of Research Christopher Neale and explored the use of local, regional, and global scale data, novel approaches in estimating crop water productivity and challenges of assessing livestock water productivity.
Multi-stakeholder Collaboration in Agricultural Water Stewardship: Solutions to Advance SDGs
A collaborative session with DWFI, FFAR and Netafim
Global thought leaders, including farmer representatives, highlighted the role of agricultural water stewardship in advancing inextricably linked SDGs beyond water scarcity and water quality concerns. This session included a presentation by DWFI Director of Research Nick Brozovic and issued a charge to unify priorities and invest in agricultural water stewardship to address the challenges of food supply and sustainability.

DWFI Executive Director Peter McCornick was also an invited guest for a talk show session titled "Road to 10th World Water Forum 2024: Water For Shared Prosperity," along with the Minister of Public Works and Housing of the Republic of Indonesia, Basuki Hadimuljono, and Professor Kenzo Hiroki from the National Graduates Institute for Policy Studies, Japan. The group shared concepts of the six sub-themes of the Thematic Process of the 10th World Water Forum and the related topics identified by water sector stakeholders.
DWFI Director of Water, Climate and Health Jesse Bell presented in the session “Cooperation for Drought Resilience,” along with DWFI Faculty Fellow Mark Svoboda, director of the National Drought Mitigation Center. DWFI Associate Director of Sustainable Agriculture Water Management Nicole Lefore also participated in the session “Innovation for Water and Climate - Agriculture,” along with colleagues from the International Water Management Institute, Well Labs, and Google.
