World Water Week 2017: Water and Waste – Reduce and Reuse

For the sixth consecutive year, the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska will share its expertise in water and food security research at World Water Week, one of the largest global forums for exchanging ideas, fostering new thinking and developing solutions to the most pressing water challenges. The annual conference, organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute, brings experts, practitioners, decision-makers, business innovators and professionals from a range of sectors and countries to Stockholm, Sweden. This year’s event takes place Aug. 27-Sept. 1 and will focus on “Water and Waste – Reduce and Reuse.”

DWFI leadership will contribute to discussions during the week through presentations and panel discussions. The institute will co-convene a three-part seminar on wastewater reuse in agriculture and participate in two expert panels focused on water security in agriculture in a changing world. Speakers from DWFI include Executive Director Peter G. McCornick, Director of Policy Nick Brozovic and Director of Research Christopher Neale.

“Sustainable water management in agriculture is essential to meeting our growing world’s complex water and food needs,” said McCornick, executive director. “This forum provides an opportunity for the institute to raise the profile of this topic among water leaders and stakeholders, while sharing the University of Nebraska’s knowledge and world-class research.”

SIWI Sofa Discussion: Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture

Executive Director Peter G. McCornick joined a 2017 World Water Week discussion on the “SIWI Sofa” addressing water scarcity in agriculture. He joined Olcay Ünver, Deputy Director, Land and Water Division of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Marco Arcieri, Secretary General, Italian Division of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage. The group talked about the importance of partnerships to address complex challenges and the need to develop solutions that fit the local needs of each country – highlighting an initiative lead by FAO: Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture.

The Global Framework launched in November 2016 during the COP22 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Morocco, and seeks to catalyze international cooperation on water scarcity in agriculture in the context of climate change and growing competition for water resources.
