At the Huskers/Wyoming game Sept. 10, NU President Hank Bounds talked about the Water for Food Global Institute and the importance of water in feeding the growing global population during his football halftime show.
“The world’s population will increase from 7.2 billion today to 9.6 billion by 2050 and demand for food will increase steeply. We have to figure out how to produce enough food for this growing global population, while not draining precious water resources. The University of Nebraska is in a perfect position to lead the conversation. Our state is a living lab. We have lots of expertise in water-related research…and great partners in agriculture across the state. And, we established the Water for Food Global Institute at the University of Nebraska for this purpose: research around feeding more people with less water.”
