How to Participate
Graduate students have two opportunities to compete: an online competition prior to the conference and an on-site, juried competition. Students must participate in the online competition prior to the conference to be eligible for the on-site competition at the conference. Graduate students must also be registered for the 2016 conference to display their poster at the conference and participate in the on-site competition.
The poster competition took place on Tuesday, April 26 as part of the 2016 Water for Food Conference. A call was made to graduate students for posters that innovatively addressed current research focused on Water for Food.
Prior to the conference, thirty-five students entered an online competition. Prizes for the top three finishers included free conference registration and $1,000, $750 and $500 in cash for first, second and third place, respectively. University of Nebraska faculty and Water for Food Global Fellows served as jurors for the online competition.
First Place: Mesay Alene Eyassu, UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education
Second Place: Leah Ruff, Department of Agronomy & Horticulture, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Third Place: James Higgins, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
All students who registered for the conference and entered the online competition were eligible to present their work at the onsite competition. The prize winners of the onsite competition were determined by a body of academic judges at the conference. Prizes for the top two finishers were $1,000 and $750, respectively. As the next two posters received identical scores, the $500 prize traditionally awarded to the third place finisher was evenly divided between the third place and honorable mention winners.
First Place: Yulie Meneses, Department of Food Science & Technology, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Second Place: Justin Gibson, School of Natural Resources, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Third Place: Juan Jaimes-Correa, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Honorable Mention: Azeem Khan, Department of Biological Systems Engineering, Washington State University
