Dr. Mohsin Hafeez leads the Strategic Program on Water, Food, and Ecosystems (WFE) at IWMI. He also leads the global Water Nexus Policy’s Area of Work (AoW) for CGIAR’s Policy Science Program. He is a distinguished international water and agricultural systems expert with nearly three decades of management experience in scientific and industry roles. He has successfully managed and delivered interdisciplinary research projects in climate adaptation, sustainable land and water management, irrigation modernization, integrated water resources management and water governance across agro-ecological zones. His work spans both data-sparse and data-rich environments in 18 countries in Asia, America, Europe, and Africa. As CGIAR/IWMI Director for Water, Food, and Ecosystems, he oversees a large portfolio of projects across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
In his previous role as the Country Representative of IWMI Pakistan, he significantly expanded the portfolio, increasing staff from 6 to over 109 across nine offices in Pakistan by winning and managing a bilateral portfolio of $25 million. His previous roles include Regional Representative for IWMI Central Asia, Associate Director at Ricardo Energy and Environment Ltd in the UK, Manager of the Integrated Water Resources Management Unit at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University, and Principal Consultant in Water Resources at GHD, along with a Research Scientist position at CSIRO Australia. His notable achievements include winning many prestigious awards in water resources management and irrigation modernization across Australia and internationally. He has an impressive publication record with over 200 scientific publications and has supervised or co-supervised two honors theses, two master’s theses, and 11 PhD candidates.
