Doug Merrey is an anthropologist with over 45 years of experience working on water resources, especially irrigation management, in Asia and Africa. He has field experience in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and other countries. He began his career working in large-scale scheme management with a focus on water users' empowerment; but has since worked on small-scale irrigation, social fairness, and smallholders' adaptation to climate change. He worked at IWMI for 20 years and, among others, set up IWMI's Africa program. He now works as a consultant, largely for CGIAR institutions.
