Brian Bruckner is the General Manager for the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District (LENRD), which is headquartered in Norfolk, NE. Employed with the District since January of 2007, Bruckner has served as the Groundwater Management Area Specialist, Assistant Manager, and General Manager. Groundwater quality conditions in portions of the LENRD have required the District to take reactive measures, dating back to 1996 when the first Phase 2 Area was delineated in a portion of Pierce County, due to elevated levels of groundwater nitrate. Additional monitoring has required the District to expand the boundaries of the water quality management area, and more stringent requirements have also been imposed in an attempt to correct the groundwater nitrate conditions that exist within impacted locations.
Bruckner has been instrumental in leading the District on collaborative projects with the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the University of Nebraska in their attempts to better define the relationship between drinking water quality and negative health impacts for residents of the District and the State. A lifelong resident of the area, Bruckner was directly involved in a diversified crop and livestock farm operation located near Osmond, NE prior to his employment with the LENRD. That experience helps him better understand and appreciate the responsibility of the LENRD when considering decisions related to natural resource management.
